Welcome to the official Summer for Marriage Tour 2010 blog. Here you will find updates from the bus tour and news about the key marriage issues.
State Senator Mike Hall in Charleston
“In our founding documents it states that our rights come from God. We need to have compassion for others. At the same time we can stand up and argue for the public good of marriage, and use lots of statistical data to prove this.
“In the final instance, there is truth and right and wrong. The public has the right to vote. Why would people be afraid of allowing people the right to exercise their vote.”
Delegate Armstead in Charleston: “We can change the direction of our country with our votes”
Delegate Tim Armstead, House Minority Leader in West Virginia, spoke this afternoon, highlighting our responsibility to protect the Constitution.
“We have the opportunity to change the direction of our country with our votes. We as the people have the power provided by the Constitution. . . . There is no right to SSM in the Constitution.
“Others are trying to destroy the Constitution that we hold very dear to fit their agenda.
“The representatives have to remember that they are elected to represent the people. We should look at the candidates’ actions, not just their words — What have they done for the people’s right to vote on marriage, and what have they done to block it?”
Family Policy Council of West Virginia President Jeremy Dys in Charleston
At today’s rally in Charleston, Jeremy Dys of the Family Policy Council of West Virginia, denounced Judge Walker’s Prop 8 ruling:
“Is there any democratic process any longer? This ‘judicial fiat’ from California seems to indicate ‘no.’
“Marriage is a major factor in electing officials. Pro-marriage candidate victories have recently been seen with the elections of Bob Cornell and Chris Christie. You saw it once again Scott Brown in Massachusetts.
“Delegate Armstead has been a great defender of marriage.”
Maggie Gallagher in Charleston: “SSM is not a civil right – it is a civil wrong.”
Pastor Olden Thornton of Raleigh International Church
North Carolina FPC President Bill Brooks: “The assembly has been cowardly”
Christian Action League Director Mark Creech: “Real love does not allow us to remain silent.”
“Real love does not allow us to remain silent on this issue.” These words from Christian Action League director Mark Creech seemed to capture the emphasis of several speakers this afternoon in Raleigh:
“The burden of proof is on gay marriage activists to prove that this is a good. They cannot. Those who will suffer the most will be children. Real love does not allow us to remain silent on this issue. . . . Providence calls us to act. We can respond with apathy or with action. We choose the second. We will never, never, never, never be silenced.”
North Carolina CWA Director Sheri Miller
Introducing Concerned Women for America state director Sheri Miller, today, Brian thanked CWA for their investment in protecting marriage:
“Mothers and wives are powerful voices in the protection of the family. We are very happy to have CWA join us today.” Sheri emphasized that the fight for marriage is not about tolerance, but about protecting children and the good of society. And she shared a startling fact for a state whose legislators refuse to approve a constitutional amendment on marriage: 78% of North Carolina voters believe in marriage as the union of a husband and wife:
The battle is not about tolerance – it is about fighting intolerance of traditional marriage. . . . It is not about tolerance – it is about denying the healthy environment of a mother and father for children.
At the World Congress in Mexico, a resolution was passed on the good of traditional marriage and lamenting the constant attacks on it. . . . It is my duty to defend my country and stand for what is right. I pray that God will continue to bless America.
