Marriage Tour Recap: Annapolis, MD

Many, many thanks to each of you who braved the heat in Annapolis on Wednesday, coming out to join us on our Summer for Marriage tour!

After a week on the road now, yesterday’s rally was a terrific reminder of why we’re doing this Summer for Marriage Tour. I wish every one of you could have been there. With Bishop Harry Jackson, Dr. J, and Derek McCoy speaking, one couldn’t help but be inspired, as the Annapolis crowd was treated to some of the best speeches of the tour thus far! The theme that came through loud and clear? “Let the people vote!”

Marriage is under attack. We have a small window of time in which to change the culture on marriage. And if we are to be successful, we must band together and speak with one voice in defense of marriage.

Derek McCoy in Annapolis: “Let the People decide. Let the People vote!” Bishop Harry Jackson tells the crowd in Annapolis: “The major civil right . . . is the right to vote.”

I especially appreciated this comment from Bishop Jackson, putting things into context: “The major civil right, for those of us who went through the civil rights movement, is the right to vote . . . .” For too long, the Maryland legislature has held the marriage amendment hostage, refusing to let it go to the people for a vote.

It’s time.

Although Wednesday’s turnout was lighter than previous rallies, with about 50 supporters in attendance, the smaller group gave the rally a more intimate atmosphere. Many of those in attendance enjoyed the shade wherever they could find it, and a number of them stayed for quite a while after the rally was over, enjoying the chance to talk with each of the speakers.

For those unable to attend Wednesday’s rally, we have put together a 2-minute video summary, including excerpts from each of the speakers.

The NOMobile is in Ohio tonight, as our tour turns from the Northeast and heads for the Midwest. We’re looking forward to tomorrow’s rally in Columbus. I hope you’ll continue to help spread the word to friends and family in other parts of the country!
